After having some successes with the desktop dashed to the dust of despair, I managed to get in enough to initiate a backup to a large external hard drive.
I will set this problem to one side now for a couple days, exasperation gaining ground.
When I get back to it in a couple days, I think I will start a complete system overhaul, reformat, etc.
